Eurofins GeneScan/Romer Labs - Protein Testkits
Protein tests are an easy and cost-efficient way to test for GMOs, however, they can only be applied with non-processed samples like seed and grains (limited use for meals/grits).
For processed samples, PCR testing is the option of choice, because proteins denature under influence of e.g. heat and acid, whereas DNA is more stable under these conditions.
Eurofins GeneScan offers dipstick quick tests and ELISA tests for a number of different traits. The tests are produced by Romer Labs, Inc. and distributed by Eurofins GeneScan in many countries worldwide.
Especially the dipstick tests (AgraStrip™) are ideal for seed and bulk testing, because they produce results within minutes and can be used on-site. You do not need a laboratory and can perform the test whereever your sample is taken. Handling is easy to learn even without a technical background. For single seed and leaf testing, there are special tests available.
The application of ELISA-Tests (AgraQuant™) requires laboratory equipment and technical staff. For soy (also meal, grits, protein isolate), this test even gives you semi-quantitative results.
