On July 4th 2017 the European Commission approved the genetically modified maize event DAS-40278-9 (trade name Enlist™) for the use in food and feed products. DAS-40278-9 is tolerant to herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and aryloxyphenoxypropionate. DAS-40278-9 has already been approved in several countries, e. g. Brasil, Canada or the USA. According to CropLife International the commercial cultivation of DAS-40278-9 in Canada and the USA has started this year as part of the stacked event SmartStax® Enlist™ Corn.

In addition to DAS-40278-9 the stacked event Bt11 x 59122 x MIR604 x 1507 x GA21 maize, and 20 combination of the events Bt11, 59122, MIR604, 1507 and GA21 have been approved by the European Commission. Furthermore the existing authorization for the use of genetically modified maize MON 810 products has been renewed.

As for all GMOs authorized in the EU a labeling obligation applies for DAS-40278-9 in food and feed products.

DAS-40278-9 is not detected by using common screening elements like 35S promotor, NOS terminator or FMV promotor. Due to the fact the GM maize DAS-40278-9 is grown commercially, the Eurofins GeneScan Screening packages CornScreen and CornScreenPlus already include analyses, which cover this GMO as well as the other new approved stacked events and MON 810, therefore ensuring a reliable initial analysis.
