The Global Control of Supply Chains by high tech Laboratory Analysis, Preshipment Inspections and Supplier Audits

Nov 2019. Due to its complexity the global supply chain of food and feed is highly susceptible to accidental and intentional adulterations, which might affect the quality, safety and authenticity of the goods. Control systems like traceability back to farm level, good agricultural practice and food safety management systems are good but proved insufficient in practice, in particular in cases of fraud. Therefore, importers are increasingly relying on preshipment inspections, supplier audits and food forensics based on high tech lab analysis to assure the integrity of their goods.

From the daily practice of an international inspection company, examples will be presented on how to control supply chains by combining these three elements and how fraudulent adulterations can be detected by modern lab analysis, e.g. by chemical, isotope and DNA fingerprinting.

Dr Werner Nader is a biologist, 67 years old and, until his retirement, worked as managing director of Eurofins Global Control GmbH in Hamburg, an international food inspection and auditing company. After finishing his PhD in biology in 1980 he worked as a biotechnologist in academics and industry till 2000 and after that in food testing. He is the principal author of one book, 48 scientific publications, recent ones dealing with the application of the DNA fingerprint in food forensics, and inventor of 12 patents. Dr Nader is an IRCA lead auditor of food safety management systems and chairman of the committee for safeguarding impartiality according ISO 17021 of the Chinese Certification and Inspection Group, CCIC, in Germany. Currently he is engaged in various senior consulting activities.
