Jan 2020. In recent times, high concentrations of chlorate residues have been repeatedly detected in food, e.g. in fish products, and affected products have been recalled as a precautionary measure. Chlorate and perchlorate are chlorine compounds that are undesirable in food due to their toxicological relevance. Chlorate is a common byproduct of many frequently used chlorine-based disinfectants. The evaluation bases of both substances are currently being revised.
