After manufacturing and before placing pharmaceutical products on the market, checking the microbiological status is part of quality control to ensure safety for the consumer. The procedure and which microbiological parameters are to be examined are described in the pharmacopeias. Normally, a count of all aerobic microorganisms present in the product is required, as well as, depending on the particular route of administration, an examination for the presence of certain specified microorganisms.
However, since pharmaceutical products themselves may have antimicrobial properties, the prior performance of a product-specific suitability test is necessary in which such properties can be identified and eliminated by various approaches.
