Analysis of glyphosate

Sidebar Image

Eurofins laboratories for food and feed testing in Germany offer the analysis of glyphosate, its metabolite AMPA and the herbicide glufosinate in food and environmental samples with detection in the trace range at a limit of quantification of 0.01 mg/kg each. Thus, our laboratories can also reliably test the application or input of glyphosate in organic products.

The active ingredient glyphosate and its metabolite can be detected in food and in processed end products, e.g. in baked goods, even after a long period of time. Studies show residues in human urine, breast milk and in water and soil samples. In March 2015, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a report linking glyphosate to certain types of cancer (see IARC Monographs Volume 112). There are also well-founded indications of reproductive toxicity, fertility damage and a neurotoxic effect of glyphosate.

Glyphosate was introduced to the crop protection market in 1974 by the Monsanto company with striking success. It is currently the most widely used broad-spectrum herbicide in the world. Genetically modified plants that are tolerant to glyphosate (trade name RoundupTM) are cultivated on a large scale worldwide. Another area of use is its application to accelerate the ripening process in cereals.
