Changes in EU Maximum Levels for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed Additives

Overview on EU Maximum Levels Belonging to the Functional Group of Binders and Anti-Caking Agents

Maximum levels are applicable since 28.11.2019 also for substances for the control of radionuclide contamination and substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins

Feb 2020. On 08 November 2019, the European Union published an amending regulation to Directive 2002/32/EC on undesirable substances in animal feed. This includes, among other things, a change in the EU maximum levels for dioxins and PCBs in certain feed additives, which is now in effect since 28 November 2019.

The change addresses feed additives of the functional groups of binders and anti-caking agents. Whereas these maximum levels were previously applicable exclusively to kaolinitic clay, vermiculite, natrolite-phonolite, synthetic calcium aluminates and clinoptilolite of sedimentary origin, the existing regulation is now extended to all feed additives of the above mentioned functional groups. In addition, since 28 November 2019, the maximum levels also apply to substances for the control of radionuclide contamination and substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins which are also belonging to the functional groups of binders and anti-caking agents

The New Maximum Values at a Glance

Maximum content for dioxins/ furans (WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ/kg)

Maximum content for the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ)

Maximum content for non-dioxin-like PCBs (Sum of PCB28, PCB52, PCB101, PCB138, PCB153 and PCB180)

Feed additives belonging to the functional groups of binders and anti-caking agents
(inclusive of feed additives belonging to the functional groups of substances for the control of radionuclide contamination and substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins)

0,75 ng/kg,

relative to a feed with a moisture content of 12 %

1,5 ng/kg,

relative to a feed with a moisture content of 12 %

10 µg/kg,

relative to a feed with a moisture content of 12 %

The existing action thresholds have not been changed:

Action threshold for dioxins/ furans  (WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ)

Action threshold for dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-PCB-TEQ)

Feed additives belonging to the functional groups of binders and anti-caking agents

0,5 ng/kg,

relative to a feed with a moisture content of 12 %

0,5 ng/kg,

relative to a feed with a moisture content of 12 %
