GM soy: Changes in EU authorisations require adjustments to testing strategies

Comprehensive portfolio and tailored consulting to adapt your GMO analysis strategy

June 2025. The approval situation for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the EU is constantly changing. In addition to recent updates concering maize, important changes to soy have also occurred in recent months that require a review of existing testing. With the "SoyScreen" screening package, we offer you a comprehensive analytical solution for genetically modified soy.

Recent changes in EU authorisations for genetically modified soy

The following genetically modified soy events have recently undergone changes to their EU authorisation status:

  • The EU authorisation for soy event CV127 expired in April 2025, as no renewal application was submitted. According to Regulation (EU) No. 619/2011, CV127 is now only permitted in feed up to a threshold of 0.1%. It is no longer authorised for use in food.
  • In addition to other genetically modified soybean events, the China-developed events DBN9004 and DBN8002 are currently undergoing the EU authorisation process. Until approval is granted, their presence in food is not permitted.

These developments require targeted adjustments to analytical strategies throughout the value chain

SoyScreen: Broad screening for genetically modified soy

Our GMO screening package SoyScreen has been designed to reliably cover a broad spectrum of genetically modified soybeans, including the events mentioned above:

  • CV127 is reliably detected or excluded in the initial screening step. If CV127 is detected, quantification can be performed in a subsequent step.
  • The soybean events DBN9004 and DBN8002 are covered by SoyScreen analysis using standard screening elements. If signals are detected, these events can be specifically excluded in follow-up testing.

This approach allows you to reliably check whether your products meet the legal requirements by enabling a well-founded evaluation of samples that takes into account the current EU approval situation.
