New standards for 24/7 digestion and ICP-MS analysis in food

Oct 2025. At Eurofins WEJ Contaminants, 2025 is all about the automation of food and feed analysis. Following the introduction of the Robi III sample preparation robot in spring 2025, another milestone has now been reached with the release of our latest laboratory robot for high-throughput analysis of metals and elements. The newest member of our robot family can not only perform sample preparation, it is also our first automation system to integrate sample preparation and measurement technology.

This development was made possible through close cooperation between Eurofins WEJ Contaminants’ analytical experts and the automation specialists at Herzog Maschinenfabrik in Osnabrück (Germany).

Key features of our new laboratory robot

Our new laboratory robot includes various modules that are necessary for sample preparation and analyses of metals and elements. These include:

  • Acid dosing
  • Rapid microwave digestion
  • Dilutions
  • Turbidity measurements for digestion control
  • ICP-MS measurements
  • Automatic repetitions and dilutions if necessary

With its 24/7 availability, simultaneous analyses of up to 27 metals and elements in more than 250 samples per day are possible, from weigh-in to the finished measurement result.

Employees also benefit from the high-tech laboratory environment: with the support of the new laboratory robot, they can focus themselves on exciting development tasks.

Quality and benefits for customers

Customers will benefit from increased laboratory capacity, greater flexibility, high reproducibility and accuracy, as well as extremely low error rates. In particular, the automatic initiation of retests in case additional dilutions are required reduces unnecessary idle time for samples.

Automated portfolio of contaminants’ analyses

With Robi II (since 2018) and Robi III (since 2025), two systems with a total capacity of 900-1000 samples per day are already available for the analysis of mycotoxins, organic contaminants, and veterinary drugs. The newest member of the robot family now complements the automated laboratory portfolio with metal and element analyses, and is the first of its kind to cover both sample preparation and analytical measurement.

Metal and element analysis

The experts from the Production Centre for Metals and Elements at the Eurofins Food & Feed Testing laboratory network in Germany have many years of experience in the analysis of all common metals and elements in all types of food and feed matrices.

With ICP-MS, ICP-OES, AAS and ICP-MS/MS, suitable measurement instruments are available for a wide range of analytical questions. The analysis of inorganic arsenic or metal species such as monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) are also part of our portfolio.
