Veterinary Drug Screening in Milk and Derived Products

Sidebar Image

Veterinary drugs are used within animal husbandry to prevent and cure diseases, but also to increase weight gain and to tranquilise during transportation. They constitute a complex group covering a couple of hundred substances representing different chemical classes and therapeutic areas. However, not all of the veterinary drugs are of equal importance for risk monitoring.

Therefore, Eurofins established an innovative HR-LC-MS screening method for the simultaneous determination of about 100 veterinary drugs from currently 9 different antibiotic and antiparasitic substance classes: amphenicoles, benzimidazoles, quinolones, ß-lactames, macrolides, nitroimidazoles, sulfonamides, tetracyclines and triphenylmethane dyes. The method has been validated in accordance with EU Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and can be applied to the following matrices:

  • meat and derived products
  • fish and derived products incl, fish oil and meal
  • egg and poultry
  • convenience products
  • milk and derived products

Compared to conventional screening methods such as inhibitory tests or other biotests, HR-LC-MS covers a large set of targeted substances including transformation or metabolic products with high selectivity and sensitivity. Due to a high level of automation the method is very cost efficient and minimizes the risk of over-looking health hazards in the area of veterinary drugs
